When Is the Right Time to Find a Specialized Accounting Firm?

When Is the Right Time to Find a Specialized Accounting Firm?Spoiler: it's probably sooner than you think.

If you're a CPG founder, you've likely had the moment - the one where you're staring at your P&L trying to figure out if you're actually making money or just moving money. Revenue is coming in from Shopify, Amazon, maybe a distributor or two, and somewhere in your QuickBooks there's a number that's supposed to tell the story. But it doesn't. Not really.

Here's the thing no one loves to admit: the gap between cost effective and actually effective is a lot thinner than it looks.

My business partner Danielle and I have spent our careers inside the CPG world - not at one or two brands, but alongside hundreds of them. Food & beverage, beauty & grooming, retail, e-commerce-first, wholesale-heavy - you name the channel mix or the revenue tier, we've probably seen it. That breadth isn't something you can manufacture. It means when a new brand comes to us, we're not learning on the job. We already know what questions to ask, where the bodies are buried, and how to build out the processes that actually scale.

In the past few weeks alone, we've had multiple brands join FINNESS and say some version of the same thing: "I wish I'd done this sooner." That feedback hits differently every time, because we know what "sooner" would have meant for their margins.

So, let's get specific about where things break down.

At even $1M in annual revenue, you're likely selling across at least three channels - Shopify, Amazon, and some form of wholesale or distribution. That sounds manageable until you realize most generalist firms (and yes, some of the AI-powered tools that promise to reconcile it all) are booking your Amazon and Shopify revenue based on deposits. Meaning: when money hits your bank account, that's when it gets recorded. No channel-level breakdown. No SKU-level insight. No gross vs. net revenue clarity. Just a lump sum that tells you very little about what's actually driving your business.

Those slick, affordable AI tools? We love the ambition. But the problem is you can only journal-entry that data in. It gets summarized and stuffed into a line item. At FINNESS, we bring data in at the SKU level - which means your financials actually show you what sold, in which channel, and for how much. That's not a nice-to-have. That's the foundation for understanding your unit economics.

Why does this matter? Because SKU-level profitability and sales channel profitability are the insights that tell you where to double down and where to pull back. They're what turns a revenue number into a strategy. Without them, you're flying with limited instruments - and in a market where input costs, retail fees, and Amazon's ever-changing ad landscape can move your margins in a quarter, that's a real risk.

The clients who come to us frustrated are rarely frustrated because their old firm was bad at accounting. They're frustrated because they were given accurate books with not enough context - and they made decisions without the full picture.

There's no perfect revenue threshold that says, "now is the time." But if you're selling across multiple channels and you don't have clean visibility into what each channel is actually making you (after fees, returns, COGS), that's the signal. The longer you wait, the more decisions you make in the dark.

We've seen what early, specialized support does for a brand's trajectory. It's not just about cleaner books - it's about having a financial foundation that can actually support growth.

If any of this resonates, we'd love to talk.
